Austin Named A Top Energy-Efficient City

Austin Named a Top Energy Efficient CityRecently Austin was named a top energy-efficient city in the U.S., according to a new study by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. The Capital City placed 6th overall on the ranking. 

The ACEEE is a non-profit organization based in Washington D.C. The group conducts research and works to promote and advance energy efficiency through policies, investments, programs and technology. The ACEEE studied over 34 cities in the nation to compile their list, known as the City Energy-Efficiency Scorecard. Factors taken into consideration for the rankings include community initiatives, transportation, buildings, local government operations and energy water utilities public benefits programs. 

Austin was one of the top scorers in the study, receiving a 62 out a possible total of 100. Boston came in at the number one spot on the scorecard with a total of 76.75. Other cities in the country that ranked high were Portland, New York, San Francisco, and Seattle. 

According to the report, Austin is on track to meet an energy savings goal of 800 megawatts by the year 2020 with municipal utility. An area for improvement the report points out is for the city to increase investment in natural gas efficiency programs.

The report does shows that Austin is ahead of the state in energy efficiency. Austin was most ahead of the rest of Texas in terms on building efficiency. In terms of the nation, Austin was a leader for building policies, showing efforts in adopting strict building energy codes and compliance, as well as incentives. The city also ranked high in community-wide initiatives.
